“What to wear: college edition”

Hi guys!
A few weeks ago I received an email from one of my readers:

“Hi, my name is Alexis and in Fall 2014 I will be a college Freshman. I’m not a girly girl, more like a sports chick, but I do like to dress up. Since I’m going into the Business Administration field, I would just like some outfit ideas. Thank you.”

At some point during my college years, my major was also Business Administration. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life – as is the case for many HS graduates – so I opted for a field that would give me options upon graduation. I digress…
I’ve compiled a few looks that I think would be ideal for college students and even those of us who graduated many moons ago.

Look 1: Denim dress & gladiator sandals
A denim dress is a great item to have in your closet because it is easy to style, especially during those morning runs to classes after pulling an all nighter. Paired with a fab pair of gladiator sandals and a colorful satchel, you’ll be dressed for success in a matter of minutes.

Look 2: Shorts & printed sweater
I really love this look. Wearing shorts doesn’t have to be indecent. By covering up your upper body while exposing your legs, you’re on the right track towards getting an education in style. This look is ideal for the fall when temps are warm enough to wear shorts and simultaneously cool enough for a light sweater.

Look 3: Business presentation
As a business student, I had so many classes that required presentations and on those days, I had to dress the part. Some professors even counted your look into your overall grade; so throw on a tailored blazer over your pencil skirt and just like that, you’ll be ready to attack the corporate world head on.

Look 4: Fun skirt & white tee
A basic white tee forms a perfect match with any dressy bottom. By rocking this gorgeous skater skirt with flats, you tone down the look while remaining quite polished.

Look 5: Ripped denim & floral blouse
Perhaps the easiest look to duplicate, distressed jeans can be worn with anything from tee shirts to button down blouses and even with an oversized blazer for a more sophisticated yet effortless feel. Complete the look with wedges or pumps to add a more feminine touch and voila!

My dear Alexis, I hope this post has provided the guidance you needed before starting on your college journey. All in all, I would suggest to stock up on the basics: a white tee, great fitting jeans, a tailored blazer and comfortable shoes. With those items in tow, don’t hesitate to get creative and of course play with prints, textures and colors to add more visual interest to your outfits.

I hope that attending college will be the first of many many many more huge accomplishments in your life. Kudos to you darling and may your undergraduate experience be successful and memorable!

With love,

Edwina
