“If you want to conquer fear, don’t sit home and think about it. Go out and get busy.” – Dale Carnegie
Raise your hand if you fear the unknown… You’re probably not all the way honest if you don’t have a hand up… I was once watching a TED talk and the speaker asked that someone from the audience joins her on stage without telling them why. For a few seconds, nobody came up until a brave gentleman jumped up and took her up on her offer. Once he got there, the speaker handed him some money and said “Thanks for volunteering; You may now return to your seat.” I’m sure at that point the entire audience wished they had volunteered but in retrospect, why didn’t they?
I discussed this last night with a childhood friend and we agreed that we both are our own worst enemies. We allow fear to get in the way of our ideas and end up remaining complacent then complain about the fact that we aren’t growing or seeing results in our endeavors. I sometimes even fear having to learn something new because it seems overwhelming from where I stand. I know, I know. I must do better. This brings me back to my new year’s resolution to renew my mind about pretty much everything that I allow to set me back because ultimately the steps we don’t take all come down to the thoughts that lead to our debilitating fear. This False Evidence Appearing Real in our minds leaves us feeling dissatisfied with our lives only because we were too scared to try.
What if we decided that it was OK to fail? In doing so, not succeeding at one thing wouldn’t be so scary. We would simply learn the lesson from our mistake and restart the journey by taking a different road. Oh how far we would all be if we thought this way! Let this be a PSA for women and men everywhere who doubt instead of believing, who complain instead of executing, who choose fear over faith: Get out of your own way and get busy! Your future self will thank you.
A black pencil skirt is one of those staple items that pair well with so many different styles of tops and for so many different settings. Such a look can be worn underneath your coat to the office during the cold winter months and even during days like we’ve had this week, where the calendar says it’s spring but mother nature begs to differ by throwing 4 nor’easters our way within a month.
To keep it real though, when it snows and I’m told that our office is still open (insert eye roll) I throw on some trousers, a sweater and my snow boots because looking stylish in a storm is no longer an aspiration of mine. I don’t want you guys to think that I look like a barbie doll every day because some days, I simply cannot be bothered but since those outfits are not what you want to see, I try to share the ones that I assume you’d enjoy.
OUTFIT DETAILS:
ZARA blouse (shop here) // H&M skirt (shop here) // ZARA pumps (shop here) // RAY BAN sunglasses // ALDO bag (on sale in NAVY)
I hope this look inspired you to bring out your pencil skirts this spring and to keep them around through fall and on the bearable winter days. Until next time, be well and be fearless!
With love,
Love the look but for my comfort and preference, I’d swap the skirt for some trousers. Message is deep for this post. For me it’s not even fear of failure as I understand failure is a learning opportunity. I’ve come to realize that what I’m most afraid of is making a fool of myself…. like the idea of being ridiculed paralyzes me half the time. It’s really insane. 😂😂can’t believe I just put that out there!

Thank you! 🙂
The good thing here is that you’ve already identified that fear so where you go from here is really up to you… If you are conscious of this fear and do nothing to combat it, then it will remain paralyzing. If you’re not trying new things and not realizing your goals because of the potential embarrassment, you are letting what YOU think others think of you keep you complacent. Most of us do it but we really have to get out of that mindset to avoid eventually looking back at a life filled with regret.
Thanks for your reading!
So much truth to this. Thank you for this post!
