Spring cleaning: 5 things you no longer need in your closet

After multiple snowstorms over the past few weeks, we are finally seeing a sign of spring on the horizon and I couldn’t be happier. There’s no better time to give your home a mini makeover and for me spring cleaning starts in my closet… So without further ado, let’s dive into the 5 things you should free your closet from while making space for the items you love.

Clothing that haven’t been worn in ages

Some of us buy clothes that we think we need just because they’re on sale. Other times, we swear we will find an occasion to wear them and that occasion never comes. Sis, if you haven’t worn it in a year because it’s too tight, too big or no longer fits your style, just let it go. If it still has a tag after 2 years, please let it go.

Stained, damaged or worn out pieces

So many times we convince ourselves that we will get that button added or that hole in our clothes fixed but that just never makes it to the top of our priority list. If you’ve washed it too many times and it’s looking dull, or if you call it lounge wear because of its bleach stains and if you wouldn’t want your crush to see you wearing it ’cause it’s ripped, it’s time to sing that lovely song from Frozen: “Let it go, let it go, turn away and slam the door…”

Excess undergarments

We all think we need a drawer full of undergarments but in reality, we only wear and rewear the same ones over and over again. I have to admit, I really have a hard time getting rid of underwear because I just feel like such intimate pieces should be burnt when they’re no longer being used (dramatic much? I know!) but that’s no excuse for allowing unnecessary clutter in our wardrobe.

Uncomfortable shoes

I loved having my shoes nicely organized on a shoe shelf until I realized that I was more obsessed with filling all the spaces on the shelf instead of focusing on quality vs. quantity. If you call them your ‘sit down’ shoes because they hurt so much when you stand in them, or if the heel is simply too high for you to comfortably walk in them, hop on Poshmark and sell these babies to someone who can actually put them to good use. Your local goodwill and Salvation Army will gladly take them off your hands as well.

Mismatched hangers

Lastly, getting matching hangers is the quickest way to give your closet a makeover without doing a complete redesign. I currently have some plastic, some metal, some wooden and even some velvet hangers and that’s not cute one bit. I am looking forward to getting these gray and rose gold velvet ones to hang all my clothes in style.

One thing I love about spring is the pairing of pastel colors. This light blue turtleneck goes so well with the muted tone of my blush jacket and vest that I’ve layered for warmth since it’s still fairly cool out. Pretty soon it will be time to hide away the thick sweaters and bring out the light spring jackets. I hope this post has given you all some pointers to get started on your spring cleaning.
