Why you keep failing at being consistent

There are so many areas of my life (and most likely yours too) that could benefit from a little more discipline, right? Imagine if we all effortlessly did the following:

Got out of bed when the alarm rang

Spent quiet time in prayer daily

Exercised consistently

Made our beds every morning

Took our vitamins

Drank enough water

Meal prepped

Spent limited time on social media

Read daily

That would automatically mean that more of us would be closer to God, more productive, in better shape, in better health, live in cleaner spaces and more life goals would be achieved. But being disciplined is not only hard but it is a lifelong journey. We never really reach a point where we’ve mastered discipline and can claim to be done with the process.

I’ve shared multiple blog posts on this topic before and prayed countless prayers for God to help me be more disciplined in certain areas but I find that more often than not, I would succeed temporarily and then my old habits will rise back up. Before you know it, I’m right back to snoozing the alarm, not exercising, and going months without reading. Part of the reason why we revert back to old habits is because we are impatient and don’t allow time for the process to become second nature to us. If we don’t reach the goal within the first week, we feel as if it’s impossible and can’t be achieved and subsequently, we give up.

Chris Bailey, the author of The Productivity Project found in his research that “As far as productivity is concerned, habits are insanely powerful.” This sounds so simple and that’s because it is but simple doesn’t mean easy. If we are determined to make lasting changes in our lives, we must change the habits that eat away at our productivity in small increments of time

Being disciplined must also be intentional. You have never heard of anyone winning a marathon by accident so the same concept applies to practically everything. We don’t accidentally achieve the goals we set for ourselves so we must set ourselves up for success by planning and preparing accordingly. “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.’ The reason why you spent 45 minutes scrolling when you needed to be working out is either because you didn’t schedule it or you didn’t adhere to the schedule that you did set. Next time, schedule 15 minutes of Instagram time only after you’ve worked out for 30 minutes and see if that doesn’t change things for you.

Being disciplined is hard and doing anything worthwhile consistently is even harder. If it wasn’t, we wouldn’t always feel the need to reinvent ourselves and work on becoming better versions of ourselves. So to recap, let’s work on being more patient and give ourselves more grace to actually enjoy the process, let’s maintain our focus on what matters by limiting our time on things that don’t serve us and let’s be intentional by having a clear plan to follow and actually follow it. You got this. I got this! Let’s crush the rest of 2020 🙂

You know someone can swear that we sit down and talk about writing the same stuff on the exact same day, it’s low key weird 😂. Great topic indeed on discipline, habits and consistency.

Girl, there definitely needs to be boundaries for social media otherwise you can find yourself scrolling all day and nobody got time for that!
