In this post from yesterday, we saw how I wore one top 4 different ways over the years. The beauty of restyling our clothing in different ways keeps our wardrobe exciting. Even if an item isn’t new, it can look new to you by mixing and matching it with old and new pieces. That’s what’s fun about fashion so don’t be afraid to try out different looks.
Let’s explore 5 styling tips that can help you maximize your wardrobe:
Use a longer skirt under your shorter skirts or dresses
This is one of my favorite tips. If you have a mini skirt that is shorter than you’d like or simply isn’t appropriate for work or church, simply use a longer skirt, either in the same color or in a contrasting color and create a whole new look. You can see how I did that here with a longer skirt and here with a longer dress.
Use a brooch to stylishly minimize cleavage
Now that I’m a woman of a certain age, (I’ve always wanted to say that. Lol) I find a brooch to be such a chic accessory. Typically, we wear them on our blazers’ lapels but if you have a low cut top that you’d like to make more modest, totally swap out your usual safety pins for a stylish brooch. So easy, yet so chic.
Belt your blazer
If I had to pick one clothing item to wear forever, it would definitely be a blazer. Wearing one doesn’t have to be boring though. I have always leaned towards more fitted styles but I’m starting to really appreciate an oversized look. Go one or two sizes up and then use a belt to cinch in your waste. This can also be helpful when wearing a fitted dress. Create balance by adding an oversized jacket and to keep the look casual, you may opt for flats or sneakers instead of heels.
Fold your dresses to be worn as skirts
The idea that once we’ve shared an outfit on social media, it can’t be worn again is so silly. But if you think your followers will remember that you’re wearing the same thing multiple times, here’s an easy way to throw them off: Simply fold the top of your dress and tuck it in. Then pull up your zipper (if applicable) and style with the top of your choice. You may even throw on a third piece like I did in this post. Here is the dress before being folded. You may also choose to add a belt to hold up your dress at the waist. You may even implement this tip by folding the top of your jumpsuits and wearing them as pants as I did here.
Layer and restyle
Add white tee shirts (or any other colors), turtlenecks or button downs under your summer dresses to wear them in the fall. Just because the weather starts dropping doesn’t mean you have to pack away your summer dresses, jumpsuits or even your strapless tops. Adding a layer underneath not only keeps you warm but definitely ups your chic factor. See how I implemented this tip here, here, here and here.
I got this skirt custom made in Nigeria last year by Zuriel Afrique. Getting it made was affordable but shipping to the states was a bit pricey. I paired the look with pink shoes from Zara (which by the look of these pictures appear to have been ruined when I walked in the wet grass with them *insert tears*)
Bonus tip:
In case you have some pants that are a bit over-sized, you can easily make them fit at the waist by attaching the hook to your first belt loop. This works like a charm. Try it and let me know if it works for you.
That’s all for today folks! Thanks again for stopping by. Until next time,
